My life as a post-Youth Minister

Image
Well its been 2 weeks since I made the official Announcement of my resignation. And only one week since I moved out of my office. Since then I have applied to several jobs and had several people wanting to take me out to eat; and several inquiries of if I was interested in applying at their church. (And one warm up Interview)So far so good. Here are a few things I've learned in the past few weeks: 1. I sure do have alot of books. 2. Get someone to look at your resume and critique it. Several sources - the better. 3. The shorter your resume - the better. You just want your resume to be an intro - not the end. The Big Question I keep getting is: "Will you be attending the church you have served the past 5 years?" Short Answer: No. Long Answer: We'll be taking a break for awhile and let them get the volunteers and search for the new youth minister they want and possibly return at a later time. Overseeing Nursery through college was alot ... and now is the time to concen

Some Christian Jobs = cheapo!

I've been applying to alot of different jobs and noticed that certain "Christian" companies are el cheapo. Why? They offer you a job but want you to raise your own support. Ummm if I was to do that why not just start my own ministry and business and forget you? Weird. Whatever happened to the passage where it says the worker is worthy of his hire. It seems we, as "Christians" skim and try to take the cheapo method rather than taking the "Hey let's hire the best, and treat everyone the best - both our customers and our employees." Heck, if I ever get my own business and independently wealthy - that's what I'm doing.

Tip #706 for Resume Writing!

This one I learned the hard way. Never, never, never, no matter what ... and how willing a church leader from a church you ministered to in Northern Virginia ...have as a reference the Church Elder named Harry Butts. (Yes, he does exist and yes I did have him on my resume about 14yrs ago) I kept wondering why some churches wouldn't respond or inquire more about my resume!

A Leap of Faith - I Resigned!

I Resigned. I gave my notice this past Monday but announced officially this past Sunday. Why? My role is changing and feeling it is what God is telling me. Though having no where to go or not knowing the next step is scarey. I'm taking a break from ministry for now. I've done this for over 13yrs and the past 5yrs have been amazing yet I think God wants what is best for me and the congregation to do this. It is definitely a change. So what is in the works? I'm looking to stay where I am for now. There is a remote possibility of serving in a "pastoring" role of a church near Toronto, Ontario down the road - just not now. I'm looking into possibly Convention planning, Human Resources or Management. I also consulted and working with the variety of church ministries out that the help ministers in transition. So all is good. My role is changing and I'm still in ministry just not overseeing the big age group I was from Nursery through College. This week I pack up
