Guilty by Association?

The older I get - the more conservative theologically I'm becoming.

There is this whole debate within the brotherhood of our churches of who do you fellowship with? In other words, who do you consider Brothers in Christ, or Christians and why?

I'm reminded that we are Christians Only, but not the Only Christians. The objective of such a question is almost to divide rather than unite.

Are there churches and denominations of which I disagree with? YES.

Interesting is how people can connect one because you attended such a meeting and So-so was there makes you like that person. Fact is just because I attended a meeting where a Republican or Democrat was - doesn't make me a democrat or republican any more than going to McDonalds makes me a Cheeseburger.

I've been to my fair share of meetings, conferences, conventions, camps. Not every one did I agree with. Fact was one of the best Church Leaders' Meetings I went to (Besides the current Fusion one I'm in now)was mostly Church of Christ Acappella. Fact is not everyone agrees with me either.

So to better understand this issue I'm going to do a Question and Answer Format.

I. Who do you consider Brothers In Christ?

Anyone who knows they are saved by grace, through faith, are baptized and are on the faith journey.

II. Would you consider having Fellowship with those of a different belief system then you?

No. You see the word "Fellowship" isn't just saying "let's all be facebook friends - and agree on everything or diagree with everything" it is sharing life together. It is more exclusive than inclusive. The term "Fellowship" some use rather loosely, but in fact is part of the disciple-making process and about sharing things in common and living that life together. We see the term Fellowship and then have it equal with the term "associated with" - which it is not. Fellowship is building upon community and interacting daily. Even if I meet with a ministerial group or go to this or that meeting doesn't make it a fellowship.

III. Would you be friends with those that don't share the same beliefs as you?

Sure. Jesus was known to be a friend to sinners. I'm probably chief among them. I'm just forgiven. Thanks be to God for His grace. I have lots of friends and even some facebook friends (Some are more acquaintainces than friends). Some are Christians, some are not, some like hockey, some do not.

IV. What about the different doctrinal positions? Would you have their resources?

I would have them. I would learn from others. Fact is I don't know it all. There are positions I disagree with. There is also discernment. I would not be going to a Universalist Camp meeting any time soon - if that is what you are asking. I think as leaders - we need to watch our doctrine closely. We have to point out those things which we think are scripturally not accurate and be standing on the premise of being people of God's Word. In using discernment - we also as leaders don't give Baby Christians the whole steak, nor feed them rubber steak.

V. What about watch dog groups? Would you want to be part of that?

I don't see myself as a watchdog. There is alot of critics out there of everything and everyone. My time isn't best used to criticize every thing or everyone but to Know THE ONE!

VI. Would you say you are legalist in some things?

Some might say the same about Jesus. Sure I might come across as a jerk at times. I'm thankful for forgiveness and Grace. I'm very proud of my heritage (Notice I didn't say tradition). I think the Restoration Movement has some great things going. I think it gets it unfair share of critics - and do think there are some good checks and balances within the system. I, as a minister, appreciate the conservative branch of our movement and embrace that.

VII. What would you say to someone that sees you have something "Theologically inaccurate on your bookshelf"?

It was part of the learning process. Fact is I have several books by atheists on their view of Christianity. Does it mean I subscribe to their view? No.

VIII. What about supporting other organizations that bear the name "Christian" or are a parachurch organization that differ from your own background?

Again discernment. Not everything nor everyone do you want your name or the Church's name associated with it - though it might be a Very good Endeavor. It might lose the focus and vision of what you are trying to achieve as a congregation. We get this all the time. Requests to support certain missions - even local ones that are "non-denominational" - we have to ask ourselves "Does this take away from what we are trying to do as a church?" and "Do we want our name associated with such a thing?"
There are several good things to do ..but as a church body our own communications system (Bulletin, newsletter etc) are to be used for those church sponsor activities and not for people thinking - "Hey I have an idea - let's support this." - without them knowing the bigger picture. Does it mean we squash their zeal and creative juices for such a project? No. They can do it on their own or get a small group to help sponsor it.

Again discernment. We had this happen about a few months ago. Several people wanted to do some benevolent type projects and have the church sponsor it. Unknowingly to them was we were already doing some of that, and had to really discern what we could and could not do (We were also going through our budget and had to cut back $40 000 from it - including some staff and hours)

IX. What about leaders?

We test them. We look for leaders. We learn, study and grow from each other. I've been learning a lot from leaders of the past, present, and even some future ones.

X. How does this shape you?

The impact of different associations, friendships, networks tends to make me better. Gives me a better worldview and especially godly view. Seeing the world through God's eyes isn't easy. I think it breaks God's heart to see how things are so easily distorted. I'm just thankful for Grace and Mercy. I laugh a lot and have fun in ministry; but I also cry alot because of the heart ache and pains I see. May in all things God be given the Glory.

Mistakes I've made in Ministry.

We've all made mistakes. I've made a lot. I'm so thankful for forgiveness and Grace.

Here are a Highlight of some I remember:

I. Not knowing about permission forms and liability. In one of my ministries I just thought it was ok to take students out and hang out. Fact is I need to let the parents know where their child is at all times. It wasn't good to get a speeding ticket with a student while getting materials for V.B.S.

II. Checking the Church Van. Make sure the vehicle is always kept up and have some one check if in good condition and running order. I think the 2 times of being stranded - this might of helped. One on a trip to Milligan College, TN and the other with flat ties on I-295 on the way home from King's Dominion. Fortunately I had gotten the vehicle over in time.

III. Counseling resources. I had a young man - I'll call him: Fred. Fred caused many an issue in one of my ministries. He was kicked out, was going to sleep in his car etc. (And that was just a tip of the iceberg) - I wish At times I knew the resources out there more to help him.

IV. Be above Reproach. I had earlier in my ministry - was single and didn't think through on all things. Thus accusations of flirting, being lazy, too much time spending with so and so etc. Could of been worse ... and did do some stupid things ... but I think being above reproach or trying to be would of helped.

V. Watching your language. People can take things the wrong way. Even when you write something. I know that communication is more than words too - it is your body language. I remember one time trying to communicate that there was an accident near a gas station and ended up making the Station's name sound like a Cuss word. (Without intending to). Language is very important. Sometimes it isn't so much what you say but how you say it.

VI. Watch your Games. Some games can be very rough. Know the rules. Keep them simple. Games like chubby bunny; even some messy games - seem to be things of the past. Try to play ones that are fun, not dangerous. I remember being the King of Messy Games (Trust me I did the Human Milkshake where you had each students chew on the ingredients in their mouth and then spit it into a cup and then I'd drink it)

VII. People are watching you. There are times (alot) I wish I can be a better husband, father etc. to my own family. Afterall, that is my first ministry. I yell, I get upset ...but I also cry. I love my family. This Sunday was a classic example: I told my one daughter she needed to be still (again) and at the end of the service she was upfront with me clinging ont to me. What that communicated to the church was I was committed to being a father as well as a leader to the church. I know I'll need to be trying better all the time.

VIII. Be a leader. There were times I admit I haven't been. Lately though in my current ministry - I've been the leader. In my last ministries I've been more of a follower? Why was that? I think it was due to perception. I was just a youth minister. My opinion didn't really matter. (Which in reality it did - and it took some encouragement from the leaders of those past ministries to let me know that)

IX. Be a life long learner. Sure I love to read, but learning from it was hard. I use to come off as the "I know it already guy" - now I'm the guy who hardly knows anything at all - willing to risk making mistakes and try Big things for God ...how about you?

I've made alot of mistakes in the past - including my family, church etc. And probably will make tons more. The big thing is am I learning from them?

What mistakes have you made?

What lessons have you got to share?

Top 10 Things You Need to Know in Ministry that aren't taught!

I'm learning more and more that ministry is about learning from the school of hard knocks rather than what you get in Seminary or Bible College/ Christian University.

I. Conflict Resolution. There will be conflict. I'm thankful for the exposure I had with Peacemaker Ministries and the training. Great resource by Ken Sande.

II. Financial Management. Not just personal but church budgets. With thousands and thousands of dollars coming in ... it is good to know the variety line items and how to allocate wisely and be a manager of the money God has entrusted. It isn't an easy task to work with a non-profit organization and keep all the budget items straight.

III. Mentoring. I wish as I began ministry there was more mentors for those in ministry. Have an ongoing mentorship peer to peer. This is what I think the Fusion Groups from VEF are turning into. wish I had them earlier in my ministry and every preacher/ youth minister would have one.

IV. Counseling resources. As to a database what Christian counsellors are out there, refer, and what ones can ministers use too and what resources they can have in case of hurt, burnout etc. Invaluable. I'm just learning of some now - after 15 yrs.

V. Better Time Management. It is all about balance. Something I don't do well. Either I'm very busy or I've seen alot the opposite direction. I want to balance my time with family. I try to continually take blocks of time off and my Day off. I wasn't good at this when I first started in ministry.

VI. Resources for my Soul. Sure Bible college/ Seminary help give you some tools for the personal journey but putting them into practice. I'm finding more joy in the Spiritual disciplines. Reading God's Word - not just for a lesson but for myself. It has taken some time to get there and I'm still getting there.

VI. Job Descriptions. Knowing the variety of jobs and resources and policies to do them. There are a variety of expectations and job descriptions from minister to leader to secretary to youth worker. I think a lot of headaches can be avoided if expectations and qualifications written out and know what is expected.

VII. Policy and Procedures. Sure this varies from church to church but there needs to be some policies thought out on Child Safety, to Emergency evacuation to a handbook on church polity etc. I think the better organization and the more administration - and tools can be helpful.

VIII. Administration and Leadership. There is a lot behind the scenes of a church that needs more leaders and better leaders. It usually starts from the staff. The elders are usually volunteers who have shepherds' hearts and can lead, but also look for direction as well.

IX. Facility Management. Insurance, Utilities, Gas lines, cleaning up rooms, buying goods, Worship supplies, Sound systems, computer equipment, vans, etc. These things aren't taught. There isn't a week go by that we don't re- arrange something for storage, more room for students, supplies etc. A lot of this is learned the hard way. Like what to do if you have a break in? what do do if an accusation arises? How to improve your facility? do you have the right tools? should we add or not add? Capital Campaign funds etc.

X. It is all about Jesus. Sometimes I think we forget that. I know it has been some time since I've been to Bible College - but more and more I see some guys excited about planting new churches, or wanting to be the next Mega Super star ...rather than just be who God created them to be and give the credit to Jesus.

Just Bigger Kids.

People been asking how I like being the preacher, as opposed to the Youth Minister. Sometimes it comes across as "so, how do you like having your own church?" My response usually is: "Oh, the church really isn't mine and I don't have my own church ...it is Jesus'"

And then it turns to the changes in my role. Then my response is that the ministry is different. I just work with Bigger Kids. That isn't a bad thing. We have all sorts of people. I love the congregation I serve. Every church has its own unique challenges and ministries and little personalities.

The congregation I serve has come through some much pain and hurt. Their journey in a lot of ways reflects my own life. The church had started off good, then one of their leaders passed away and they went through their own periods of UPs and DOWNS, and learning things the hard way. I've been there. Experiencing my own Father's death and others changed my life and thus learning through the school of hard knocks. (Fact is the church and I are both learning through that school even now)

One thing I can honestly say is I love the ministry. I love these people. I hurt for them. I pray for them. I see Great potential. I see God working. I so appreciate that they trust and honor to have me as their preacher. I'm just a jerk, whose trying to be Jesus' Hands and feet and so often fall short. I'm so glad for this church to allow me to experience failure, to get up off my hands and feet and try things again. My prayer is that I live up not to Their expectations ... but the expectations that God would have me do and for the people here to be living for Jesus as well.

Won't you Join me?

Our Church Breakin!

Here is the note I wrote our Church Family, after the church breakin last nite and informing them of such.

Jan. 11, 2010

Dear Church Family,

I want you to pray. Pray for our Church and our leaders. If you can do that RIGHT now that would be GREAT!!! It seems sometimes when we take 2 steps forward - Satan wants to throw a WRENCH into the plans. In the Spiritual Warfare that is going on (READ Ephesians 6:10-20) there are things that might discourage us. But TAKE courage God is with us; who can be against us?!

Now for the Spiritual battle or rather the Minor Wrench that Satan tried to discourage us today. You see last nite our building was broken into. The police were called this morning. There is some damage. Doors - locks etc. It looks like someone tried to get some loose change and was looking for the offering $$$. The good news is nothing of value (Sound System, laptops, computers, TVs, Equipment etc is missing) A few doors were damaged and a few cabinets. Whoever did it was through all the offices and ramaged through the whole building from the attic to the food pantry to the clothes closet. The Good news is there wasn't much of a mess. There was a few missing coins from the coin jar & from Naomi and I's caffeine addiction but other than that God really protected.

We're looking into getting estimates to what it would be to repair/replace the doors etc and work through our insurance company and the leaders here. One of the things I want to let you know about this is because sometimes people misunderstand or see the police at our building or rumours get started etc. We had a minor breakin. God really protected. A few of us are shaked about it. Please pray for the young person or person(s) who did this. Pray not just for justice; but they would come to know Jesus. (In some ways I wish they took one of our Bibles). Pray that God continually protects as HE always does. Also PRAISE GOD that we have this tool of a building to come to. PRAISE God for our GREAT services yesterday. And in all things, PRAISE HIM, through the good times and the bad.

Thanks for listening. Keep faithful for our King, after all, Woohoo ... Jesus Loves You!!

In Him,

The Theology of McDonalds.

"Good Time Great Taste"

"I'm loving it!"

"You Deserve a break today"

So yesterday we went to the Fancy Golden Arches Restaurant for my son's birthday.

What if church were more like McDonalds?

Treating people like they were First?

The problem with Church, is we do a lot of comparisons to it being a Business.

We, (Myself included), treat church as Consumers, rather than Contributers.

We want it our way, right away rather than viewing church as something we give ourselves to.

The congregation I serve is currently "Too big to be small, but too small to be big." We're at the point where we can't do everything (Nor should we) yet people complain and compare us to MR.MEGA Walmart Church. (I tend to and am hard on myself and sometimes my own strongest critic)

Back to McDonalds, It seems to me that this restaurant puts on a good front. A good face, and sometimes a good product. The problem is it isn't really of substance. It gets old fast. People goto McDonalds because they want fast food. (Notice I didn't say good food) It lacks sometimes in the overall. People go to McDonalds because they want that type of food (which isn't bad but have it everyday and it gets old fast).

I, almost, see this with churches too. They may serve a good front. Put on a good product. But ultimately lack in the quality. They may do everything. But in order to do everything they forget the main thing. Sometimes I think the better churches don't do so many programs but focus on what they do well .... to do that better. Having Vision. Having Focus.

McDonalds tends to do that. They need to get back to that. They serve hamburger and fries and a coke well. These other items get them "Beyond" what they do well.

We, as the church, need to be in Discipleship making. Focusing on loving God and loving others. All the other stuff is just fluff.

Top 10 Ministry Moments of 2009.

10. Doing a Funeral for a young man who committed suicide. One of the hardest moments to do but also gave opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

9. Pinewood Derby. We had the opportunity to race and have fun and have tons of children and their families at our church. I got to build several cars with my own kids. It was fun and a great opportunity.

8. Our leaders helping out with several policies. Over a period of time we came up with a benevolent, building, and events planning procedures. Helped us refine in what we are doing to keeping the Main thing the main thing.

7. Replacing our roof. We had some damage to our roof of our facility. We need the funds to replace the full thing and God provided. We even had over a dozen guys help put the shingles on the roof to make it easier for the crew to go to work.

6. Digital Sign. We had a few people donate to have a digital sign to communicate events, calendar etc. in our foyer. A great opportunity and tool to use. We even had other ministries come look at it to use in their context.

5. The Clinical Pastoral Visitation Program. This past Spring I got to go through a tough course of CPV at Western Maryland Hospital and what it means to be a chaplain. Currently as a result of this program I'm considered a Chaplain Associate. I get to go in as a volunteer chaplain at Western Maryland and help out. Great opportunity to serve.

4. Tri-state Christian Service Camp. A week of camp never gets old. I loved getting to teach and speak at campfire. I still pray for the students' lives we touched.

3. Fusion. Our local preachers' meeting. Each month we meet, discuss a book and pray for each other. It goes beyond the whole "So how big is your church mentality?" to that of Kingdom work and genuine concern for one another.

2. My Church Family. I still get thinking about such things as the great VBS, the summer small group meetings, the Fall Harvest party and campout, Easter Egg Hunt, and even getting to reach out through Relay for Life. We have people behind the scenes with our clothes closet, food pantry, Christmas, Easter programs and the daily activities and staff. Such an honour. Pouring life into people is worth it but isn't easy. I think of the lost loved ones as well of funerals I've helped: Harry Gouff, A. Shrader, P Renner, J. Ammons and Lee Rephann. Two of which were WWII vets. I probably have the finest and greatest group of people to work with. From staff to volunteers.

1. People coming to the Lord. We had over 11 baptisms. Several I had the opportunity and honor of having others do them. It was great seeing a father baptize his daughter. A Grandfather baptize his great grand daughter. A 85 yr old man to be baptized in the Lord and then a few weeks later to be with the Lord.

It has been a tough year. People's jobs lost, some people left our congregation, differences of opinion. God has done some great things in 2009. All I can ask is do it again, Lord. Do even mightier things in 2010 - that all we can say "It was God working and to Him be the Glory."

Ministry Blues or Is it?

Ever get those ministry blues?

Sure everything is going ok. We have had our share of baptisms, new people coming but also people going.

I'm at an interesting place in ministry - I see several challenges ahead ... great potential, great hurt in people, yet God can do some great things.

This week I had ranted with a friend about the challenges I've faced in this new ministry and the steps ahead. I've come to realize I can't do it alone. It is only by God's grace and power that I'm in ministry.

Ephesians 6:19 seems to be a key verse for me. "Pray also for Me that Whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly male known the mystery of the gospel."

We've (as a church) have had some facility renovations (Which some thought we couldn't do yet even when I first came on staff), we've had people's lives changed. Dealt with unique ministry challenges: Family struggling with suicides this past year, family members who lost loved ones, and a loved one who was baptized just weeks before meeting the Lord. We also had opportunity to serve people, love God and love others. As I'm looking to my own ministry blues - I see the blessings therein.

God has done some great things. How about you? what is God doing in your life?

Budget Woes!!

It is that time of year. Looking at the budget for 2010. Alot of churches have budget woes. The interesting thing is I'm not worried. Sure there is alittle worry but God will provide. I don't think I've ever been part of a congregation that didn't have some sort of budget woes or need more funds to do ministry.

I remember a few years at Cary where we had a bare bones budget. Frozen spending. And no increases.

As I look at the budget I only see God's handywork. He is the One working.

When I first came to this ministry - the roof need repairs and we knew it would be lots of money. Well, interesting is God provided for our roof, van repairs, digital piano, digital sign and even more. This is close to $40 000 over our regular budget given in less than a year and a half. We took a special offering to give to Missions and thousands given. God has provided.

I've been praying lately. (Actually alot about this) If everyone would just tithe we'd make our budget ... 3 times over. Then if everyone just increased their giving by $10/ wk we'd be ok as well.

Ultimately this is all in God's hands. He owns everything. I'm excited why? Because God has given us a challenge. A Goliath sized task in which we can be David but only give credit to God. We can't do this on our own. So as we enter 2010 - we're being realistic but also taking that step of faith. How about you?

How is your church budget? How is your giving? I've seen alot of churches hurting this year and even had to let staff go etc. My prayer is that we trust in the ONE who owns everything to provide.

Pragmatism versus Programs

Currently I'm in that situation in ministry where we're "too big to be small but too small to be big." It is an interesting situation. There are some thinking we need more programs, more quick fixes, more ...more ..more.

I had a dialogue with someone that said "Well you don't have this or that ..." And seemed to be more of a consumer than a server. (There also others who saw issues but also wanted to be a part of the solution; not the problem)

One of the issues with programs is that is what your church sometimes becomes known for. We might be committed to our church, but are we The Lord?

What we win them with, is what we have to keep them with. If gimmicks, give-aways, FREE this or that ...guess what you have to continue doing?

Right now I believe we're trying to think what is the One or Two things we do well ...and let's do them even better. Let's be known to be Jesus in the community .... not doing a food drive, drive thru, relay (And not saying these things are bad and are tools but what are we doing besides the latest and greatest next thing?)

I'm praying that our congregation doesn't become lost in mediocrity but is more about Loving God, loving people and changing the world.

How does one do that? That I'm taking it one step at a time.

Catalyst One Day.

Last Monday I went to Baltimore with a few friends to the one day conference called: Catalyst One Day. I heard about Catalyst from several of my friends who went to the big convention in Atlanta.

The Big word of the day was "Momentum" - Gaining and Substaining it within the ministry context. Now there were lots of notes I took and alot of little tidbits of which I can apply to my ministry context without compromising what the Bible says.

One of the sessions, entitled "Don't Be That Couch" was well worth the day.

Here is one tidbit I wrote down. "Church are empty because they love their models rather than the people." "Maybe Apple, Coke are more committed to their shareholders than we are to our Savior."

Alot to process with 40 page booklet and all the notes I took. Applying - tweaking and throwing out the old couch won't be easy.

BRBPDYM - Big Red Ball Purpose Driven Youth Ministry

It all started out as a discussion on what it means to be purpose driven and ministering to those in the post-modern era about 12 years ago.

Online there wasn't message boards or forums as much as listservs. Email lists and debates and discussions. Youth Specialties had this one listserv started by Mike A of Mikey's Funnies. (Later would become YMExchange) So as the discussion came about, one person suggest all we need is a Big Red Ball. A Big Red ball? Yeah, Big Red Ball Purpose Driven Youth Ministry. It wasn't so much the tool but on the relationship.

Bouncing the ball back and forth and asking the students how they were. Genuinely interested. Actively listening and then bounce, bounce. It was more of a tool, and a way to say "All the gimmicks of the world aren't worth it unless you are willing to love God and love those students."

Sometimes as I reflect back ... I think we need a BRBPDC - Big Red Ball Purpose Driven Church. A Church that actively listens - prays, helps, heals, and seeks God. In other words, just being the church to people. Loving God and loving others.

Are you with me?

The Wussification of God's People: The 3 Bs.

We, as the Church, sometimes get our focus wrong. Don't worry, it happens. Our focus sometimes ends up on the tools rather than the Toolmaker. Sometimes we focus on 3 Bs in ministry - Buildings, Bodies, and Budgets.

Are these 3 Bs bad? No. But if that is the only focus of your ministry, you are missing the point, or rather nothing more than a social club or business rather than focusing on Jesus.

You see Buildings can be a tool for leading people to Jesus but shouldn't be the sole focus.

Bodies are important as well. Souls are valuable and we are to Go and make disciples. And numbers for numbers' sake doesn't do anyone any good. It is about transformation and helping people be disciples, of well, Jesus.

What about the budget? Well the focus doesn't need to be solely on budgets - otherwise you drive yourself crazy. Are we to be good stewards with what God has given us? Sure. The focus isn't on these 3 things but on Jesus. Can these 3Bs help you in focusing on Jesus? sure. But in and of themselves should not replace nor compete with that of Simply Being the Church God has called us to be.

So how has this been the wussification of God's people? Well we focus on these 3Bs so much that it takes the focus off of Jesus and His Bride. Let's get back on task. We can use these tools, but recognize what they are: tools and not the Chief Focus.

How about you? do you focus on the 3Bs? worry about them? Taking your focus off Christ?

I know I have at times.

Quit the Whining!

I appreciate so much guys like Doug Fields, Marko and what they have done for Youth Ministry. One of the things I've noticed lately though in both regional and even local church is that there are a lot of whiners out there.

We pick on Mr. Mega Church. We pick on Mr. Mega Speaker.

And if we don't do that we pick on Mr. small church and ask why aren't you growing?

Why don't you have this or that?

Or why am I not being feed? What's in it for me?

The problem with that statement is it becomes all about YOU rather than about God.

I think sometimes the church has alot of whiners in it. Let's grow up and move onto the Spiritual meat! I'm ready - How about you?

The church is the Bride of Christ ... my prayer is I treat her that way.

The "O" Knows - The 3 Os in Ministry.

Wanna know what ministry is about?

It is about the One Thing. I'm thinking it is about the "O" Factor. (Basically Jesus)

But here are 3 Os ... I'm going to try to live by (And no it isn't survivor to Outwit, outlast, outplay my fellow survivors)

It is about:

I. Outlove. God calls us to love another. Love our enemies. I John reminds us where love comes from. They will know we are Christians by our love. Imagine how the world will view us if we just loved people. Loved sinners, love those different from you, and loved even those that we just can't stand. Too often I hear about the people of the "Church" ("Christians") sling mud on the Bride of Christ. We need to stop this. Taking people from where they are. Listening, caring, being active. Discipleship takes time.

II. Out fruit. As a result of our love - people will see our Actions. They will know we are Christian not because of what we are againts, but because of how we live. So often the word "Christian" brings up images of wrongdoing, of hatred etc. Why not change that? I'm trying to do that. Trying not to be so hyprocritical in my own actions and lining up to what God wants me to be.

III. Outlive. Hang in there. Tough times will come. I've been through many fires in ministry - youth ministry especially. I have many friends have too. Learn to deal with criticism. Outlive your critics. Prove them wrong. Be nice to them. It is like heaping hot coals on their head. I hear alot of whiners in ministry ... I want it this way, oh the preacher didn't greet me, your church is too small, your church is too big, you don't have this program like Mr. Walmart McChurch down the street does. (I'm thinking so why don't you do something about it or goto McChurch before I just choke slam you into this floor - then remember I have to show them Grace and love too - see I told you it wasn't easy for me)

One of my friends, Bud Yoder, who has been in ministry for a long time reminded me "We are called to preach the Gospel." I think more leaders and myself need to hear that. Sure there are some good programs; things to do - but ultimately I'm called to preach. Whether it be that sermon in shoes or the one on Sunday morning.

How about you? How are you livng the 3 Os in your life?

Can we stop the Blaming?

Recently The Restoration Herald
had a great article on "Can we Stop the Bleeding?" on the abuse that happens to ministers and staff alike in a church setting by elders.

I do think we need to be aware that there is some of this going on. I was even involved in efforts to help fellow youthworkers who are hurt by the church. (Which is very common but resources are rare for youth workers). There are lots of resources out there for ministers hurt and in pain by the church. I was there. I've been hurt, and probably have hurt the church itself.

But can we stop the blaming? Sure it might be someone else's fault, some who does this to you; we need to move on. Forgive. Extend forgiveness as it has been given to us. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

I've heard many a preacher grip and complain about his elders; and even vice versa. The thing to me is we're a team. This is Kingdom mentality. We have alot more at stake than our egos. Let's not blame each other or dwell on that past ministry or that one "Elder" that has hurt us. For every bad apple ... I've had a lot of good men I have worked with. Godly men who wanted to do what is right.

Rare is the article that sticks up for the godly elders. This should not be so. We, as ministers, need to be supportive of our elders. Hang in there. Pray for them. Point out the flaws. I've had my share of mistakes in ministry, if it wasn't for some of the elders I had ... I think I would of been gone along time ago. They allowed me to fail, learn, pick up the pieces. It was a learning process. Still is. When we start blaming .... we also cause some wounds to open up again ... and make the bride of Christ look bad.

My prayer is not only can we stop blaming each other; but support one another as Christ supports and forgives us.

Questions to ask:

1. How is your staff and leadership? A team? Conflict? some wounds there?

2. Why is it easier to blame others, than look at one's self?

3. What resources have you found to not only stop bleeding but the blaming?

4. Who do you have in your life that is a great example of a Christian leader?

The 3Ds

So I got thinking about what are the three things on has to do on any given project?

Here is what I came up with.

I. Design. One has to design and think of what you want to achieve.

II. Determination. What are the steps you need to take to get your design to its end? What objectives do you need to met the ends? Determining how to do about your design is key.

III. Direction. This is different from design and determination. the direction helps with your determination and the design phrases. Also in having direction - it clarifies not only the end but evaluates your design and determination? Have I bite off too much? what resources do I need to achieve this?

----------------------------------------------------------

Now let's take this a step further ... how does this apply to a ministry setting?

We need to need to know what our church and ministries are designed to look like?
We need to be determined to take steps to support the design?
We need direction - not just a formula but have God in the equation as well. I've seen many ministries base their ministries on the latest book, gimmick, or convention and try to design their ministries and were determined to make them look like the next MEGA SUPER WALMART CHURCH. The problem? God wasn't in the equation.

Let's be who God created us to be. He gives the increase. We just need to be busy trying to plant seeds and growing those seeds, and the increase will come.

8 Excuses People Give For not Attending Church

So I read this Article
on 5 Reasons (They actually have 8) people don't goto church.

Got me thinking of Dan Kimball's book: They like Jesus, just not the Church

But the really shocker is most excuses come from so-called Christians.

So let me attempt to answer these excuses.

1. What do I wear? Seriously dude? Come naked. OK. Don't come naked, but just wear what you normally would (Minus the thong). Church isn't a comparison Dress up game but rather who you are and what you want to be. It is more than clothes.

2. Why would I want to come to church; it is the only day I can sleep in? Seriously? You sleep in until 10am? I gave that up when I went to college. There is also this wonderful invention - called the Sunday Afternoon nap. Most guys do it in the Fall while watching NFL when their team is losing anyways ... so you should try it sometimes.

3. I can worship God at home by watching that TV preacher or out in the Woods. But do you? Most people who use this don't do this - another lame excuse.

4. But I understand the church and its styles. Neither does everyone else. It is called learning.

5. There are too many hyprocrites there. Always room for one more. The only difference between those that are the church, and those that aren't Christians - is Christians have accepted Forgiveness.

6. I don't like the style of music. Don't worry, neither do I. Style changes. It isn't about you; nor me. It is about God. It isn't about hymns, contemporary, non-contemporary, traditional, grunge, blended. Worship is about God. It is more than singing. Singing can be a part of worship but in and of itself is not worship alone. Worship shows what and Who you love. Worship is always changing.

7. There is nothing for my family. No students my son's age - so he can date girls (I actually got this one) For small churches and medium sized there is a catch 20. too small to be big; and too big to be small. People Church shop. Unfortunately. Well, super Walmart mega church down the street has an awesome this and that - why don't you? And I'm like - well, thanks ... I'm so glad you think we need that ... why don't you head that up? (Silence). There is lots for people to do if they want to get involved rather than just sit on the sidelines. Whiners and complainers need not apply.

8. See Better things. (This goes along with #7) People always think the Grass is greener. The problem is all churches are messy. No church is perfect. (If they think they are - RUN AWAY). The problem though becomes it (Seeing things better) sometimes turns into a bashing of the bride of Christ and turning her into a prostitute rather than the Bride she is. You see the Kingdom of God is bigger than any one church; and any one congregation but is a part of the Body and the Larger Universal CHURCH.
We have to be willing to make a less than desirable situation better and great. See the optimism in the situation rather than giving up hope and just throwing in the towel and going down the street to Mr. Super-walmart Church that we think has it all together when it doesn't either.

Are there people that need to leave and go to another church? Sure. Some people just aren't going to be satisfied no matter what and in a new context might thrive. I'm just glad that God is still molding, making, refining the congregation where I am at - included myself - messy disciple at all.

What Excuses have you heard? Any others you would add?

Here are some I found amusing

5 Positives Effects of the Recession for our Congregation!

Adam's post on 3 positive effects of the recession on the church
got me thinking about my local context and how the recession has affected us.

Here are 5 positives effects I could think of that has helped our church family where I serve.

I. Our benevolent policy. We relooked at how we did benevolence. We looked at scriptures such as 1 Timothy 5:4-10 and Matt. 25:31-46. It use to be if there was a need - we helped out. The problem was this might of been enabling the problem rather than solving it. Or in my words - putting a bandage where there is a severed arm. We had to think of ways not only to stop the bleeding but also have it not happen again. We relooked at our benevolence as a leadership and wanted to be better stewards of which God entrusted us with.

II. Intentional about our Resources. As a small to medium sized congregation - reality was we couldn't do it all nor should we. This past Fall I had a crash course in what resources are out there. I had meetings, trying to partner with community agencies and had to research to see what is out there. (Sometimes the work is already done - you just have to find it) We were working with different social service agencies (And I suggest you go and visit your local social services office and befriend them and ask the tough questions - if someone is in need or rent assistance, food, home, etc ... where do I goto? What is out there?)

III. Honest about our Budget. We can't take love offerings for every Sally's sister's cousin's dog's nephew's owner who happens to be circulating on the internet as dying. We can't. We would like to help and love to help but need to be intentional about what God is doing. We had to cut some areas. We had some of our own facility damaged (due to Winds etc) and didn't have a reserve fund but asked our people to step up so God can provide. (We view our facility as a tool and means but not an end - It is a tool of which God has given us to point to the end, Jesus.) Thus honest conversations and talking about not meeting ends if something ongoing with us but we're trusting Him!

IV. Opportunity to serve. Because of a tight budget - we also been honest and because of that people have given. We had a new digital sign out of nowhere - because someone saw a need. We had people give above and beyond to meet several thousand dollars to repair our facility beyond what I can imagine. (IT is only God)
We have people giving of their time, talent, and tithe and discussing it more to do so. We have people organizing our Food pantry. We have a clothes closet which about a year ago was rare to see people come and now is becoming a regulare resource. For a medium size church - these 2 basic needs of food and clothes is huge. It was amazing to see at the end of July people bring truck loads of food for our pantry. People - even without jobs - are trying to find a way to serve.

V. Because of Opportunitues to serve - our giving increases. Not just monetarily. We have people giving of their time and talents. Starting next month - our leadership is going to using this opportunity to give back to the people. How? In the midst of a recession - sometimes the hardest talks to do is about money. Our focus this Fall will be on stewardship, personal finance, and equipping people to manage better of what God has given them. We're not looking for our own Giving to Increase but rather people to view everything they have is not their own anyways - it is God's and to use it wisely. Parable of the Talents.

That is all I can think of. How is the recession affecting the context where you live?
