Youth Ministry as a Crutch

So I got thinking that there are churches that think Youth Ministry as a Crutch. They use, abuse, and misuse the idea of youth ministry. So here are some things that churches do that use Youth Ministry as a Crutch:



1. They see it as a way to Grow the Church.

2. They see youth ministry as glorified babysitting.

3. More programs, more outings = more fun, games and more of YMCA director.

4. They get what they pay for. So let's pay our youth minister poor, give him no Budget but we expect our church's youth group to be like Willow Creek, Saddleback or any other Mega Church (Insert Name here)

5. Isn't youth ministry just a stepping stone so young ministers can be "REAL" Ministers and get their own "Church" (Notice tongue in cheek)

6. Let's Sell. Fundraise and market Jesus. Afterall it will bring people to our church.

7. We don't want those type of kids. (What type is that anyways?) Just look after our kids. (Back to the babysitting mentality)

8. The Senior Minister is the final authority. (Translation: Don't you dare do anything to tick us off or you're fired and we'll talk to the Senior Minister before you because we don't have to come to you ...)

9. Why aren't you at all our kids events, and why did you have to have all these trips during my sons basketball season, and why is it my "Sally" can't be in the Praise Band but that girl with "Pink hair" can?

10. Everyone is your Boss.



Don't you just want to love God and love students rather than using the Crutches and politics of Church agenda.

11. Instead of taking responsibility as parents, I fear we often expect the youth minister to be solely responsible for teaching children about God. A youth minister is there to assist us as WE guide our children by word and example, not to do all the teaching for us.

I hate David Crowder. Okay,maybe hate is such a strong word, maybe its dislike. I have nothing against David Crowder himself; just that so many in the worship ministry aspect want to attempt to be well like David Crowder or the next Matt Redman or Chris Tomlin of worship ministry. Don't be like David. (Or even like Mike for that matter). What God is doing through DCB is great. But be who you are, and God created you to be. Isn’t worship a daily thing? Isn’t worship about a lifestyle of living and breathing? I’m seeing more Church Worship teams, both youth and adult, trying to impersonate David Crowder. Please … there are only so many songs that can be sung like David Crowder. Sometimes it saddens me to see Lead Worshippers in churches trying to sing, act, and even look like Crowder. My Search for the Black Rock Hotel.

I'm fascinated by History. From my office I am at the foothills of South Mountain and can view Black Rock. (I want to take a picture the opposite way from there to my office - how cool would that be?) In talking to some church members, they gave me some history. One is a man whose father, built a log cabin from the lumber of South Mountain. He generously gave me these two pictures to scan. (I haven't found any others online and just some scarce history about the ole Black Rock Hotel) "Black Rock is located just over the crest of the Mountain, over looking Washington County and Hagerstown to the west. About 20 years after Reason’s return visit to Wolfsville the Black Rock Road was built across the mountain toward Hagerstown, passing to the northside of Black Rock. Just a line to say I'm living, Just a line to say I'm living, That I'm not among the dead. Though I'm getting more forgetful, ... And mixed up in my head. I've got used to my arthritis, To my dentures I'm resigned. I can manage my bifocals, But, oh my!! I miss my mind. For sometimes I can't remember When I stand at the foot of the stairs, If I must go up for something Or, I've just come down from there. And before the refrigerator so often, My poor mind is filled with doubt. Have I just put food away, or Have I come to take some out? And there's times when it is dark, With my nightcap on my head.
